Couple sentenced for child abuse, assault

A couple were sentenced to 15 years in prison after investigators say children in their care were found malnourished in a home.

Joseph Reid and Kayla Matlock were convicted of assault in the first degree and second-degree criminal abuse in the case.

Reid and Matlock were indicted for two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal abuse in the case in October 2023.

Reid and Matlock were indicted on assault when reports say they engaged in conduct which “created a grave risk of death” to children in the home, causing serious physical injury. The indictment also included charges of “wantonly abusing” the children.

The indictment showed that the reported incidents happened between January 1, 2023 and July 19, 2023 in Whitley County.

According to the commonwealth’s attorney, Reid and Matlock have to spend a minimum of 12 years and nine months in prison before being considered for parole.
