Six puppies abandoned near the Allen community brought workers from the shelter to action this week.
“We have to take these puppies in because they were going to die out in the woods,” said shelter manager Elexis Craft. “So emaciated, starving, skin and bones.”
After taking them in, shelter workers took the discarded dogs to the vet, where Craft said they were diagnosed with two types of mange, worms, fleas, ticks, and several infections. She said the shelter is now housing the dogs, even though there is not enough room or resources for more paws.
“We’re so over capacity. We’re keeping dogs in our cat room, cats in our dog room, wherever that we can find space,” said Craft. “Sadly, we’ve had to turn down multiple people in the past couple weeks.”
The shelter has adoption fees of $100 for cats and kittens and $130 for dogs and puppies. However, Craft said there are often financial sponsors who step in the make sure the animals find their perfect fit. All animals homed by the shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and clean.
